Hello internet world! So tonight in my Senior Seminar class we did an assignment relating to the winter olympics. Basically we had to come up with four games that each represented a different winter olympic event since they are coming up soon. We also had to make sure it was a school wide competition. This got me to thinking about the topic of tonight's post. Alternative games in physical education.
As I have progressed through my classes and learned various teaching styles and games, the one consistent question my teachers always asked us was what can we do to make what we are teaching relatable to the students? How can we relate this to real world experiences? This question and my assignment got me to thinking of the importance of making sure students can make a connection with what you are teaching in the classroom at home.
I really did love the idea of have a school wide olympic competition! If only I was a certified teacher already! Another game that I think should be taught in schools is the popular game from the Harry Potter books Quidditch. Just about everyone has either read these books or seen the movies and it is a fun game and an excellent way to help students make the connection from school to home. I really think playing a version of the Hunger Games would be interesting as well, but I have not quite figured out to design the rules so that everyone may stay included.
Back to the point. Having games and activities that students can relate to outside of school should be added into p.e. classes as much as possible.

The Importance of Life/Leisure Games in P.E.
So this is my first blog posting. It's a little nerve racking to put your thoughts and opinions out there for everyone to read and also to pick a topic to talk about, especially a specific one relating to Health and P.E..
My topic on this blog post is the importance of lifetime leisurely activities in P.E. classes.
Not all students are athletes and enjoy physical activity. P.E. classes need to have a variety of options that cater to every student, not just the athletes. Kid's are more likely to continue to engage in physical activity outside of school if they have positive experiences in school. What is so great about lifetime activities is that they can be individual or team based and competitive or non-competitive. Being able to have those variations unlike in traditional team games is really helpful in getting students who do not enjoy physical activity to participate and even have a little fun. Also being able to make these activities competitive gives the students who do like to compete, a chance to be competitive with each other (That last sentence was a little repetitive).
I know when I get my first teaching job, I will endeavor to have as much variety in activities as I am allowed by my school and curriculum!
